Disabled people around the UK are being encouraged to take part in this year’s Euan’s Guide Access Survey to make their feelings known regarding disabled access, as well as matters such as disabled parking, accessible toilets, transport and cost of living increases.
The 2021 survey revealed some interesting findings, including that 73 per cent of people find information on venue websites misleading, confusing or inaccurate, while a further 73 per cent had experienced disappointing trips or had to change their plans because of poor accessibility. Furthermore, 59 per cent said they believed the pandemic had made disabled access worse.
The survey is live right now and will be open until November 25th, so there’s plenty of time to participate and ensure that your voice is heard. The data gathered during the survey is used by the Euan’s Guide charity to help improve accessibility, with more than 2,400 people sending in responses last year.
The charity itself was founded in 2013 by Euan MacDonald, himself a powerchair user with motor neurone disease. Along with his sister, he set up the disabled access review site after finding that a lack of accessibility made typical everyday experiences stressful.
He said: “This survey is extremely important in establishing how disabled people, their families, friends and carers feel about disabled access through their own lived experiences. The survey results inform us on the disruption of covid and how it has affected accessibility, asking whether the pandemic has pushed back progress.”
Mr MacDonald has just been featured in this year’s Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 list, which strives to change the public perception of disability by recognising influential and successful people who are leaders in their field.
