American multinational consumer goods corporation Procter & Gamble has unveiled new disability-friendly packaging for its popular Olay line and has set the designs to open source so that rest of the industry can follow suit.
However, Fast Company reports that the innovative designs are currently limited edition, and only available online, and it is suggested that at the moment, the release of the redesigned packaging is no more than a PR stunt and marketing tactic, leading disabled consumers to respond with scepticism.
While adaptations can be made to create mobility bathrooms to make life easier for people with disabilities or mobility issues, many common bathroom products can be difficult to use, particularly caps that can be hard to open.
The easy-open lid has been developed with people with disabilities in mind and is set to feature on P&G’s most popular Olay products. including Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream, Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Facial Moisturiser, Retinol 24 Face Moisturiser and Collagen Peptide 24 Face Moisturiser.
Designers from P&G leased with people with a range of conditions, such as dexterity issues, limb differences, joint pain, and vision impairments, while also consulting with external experts.
The new design features an easy-open winged cap, extra grip raised lid and a high-contrast product label and braille text that reads ‘face cream.’
P&G has said it will not patent the design and will open up the design to the wider industry. The packaging was created as a result of research from the World Health Organisation that found 15 per cent of the global population lives with a disability.
Olay Senior Vice President Chris Heiert said in a statement, “As a global brand, it’s our responsibility to ensure that all consumers have access to products that serve their needs and fit seamlessly into their daily lives.
“But we can’t do it alone, which is why we’ve chosen not to patent this lid, and rather share the design widely with the beauty community.”
