Sefton Council has issued an approval notice for a major new housing development in Maghull, which will include a housing scheme aimed specifically at older people.
A total of 855 new properties will be constructed at the site north of School Lane, which will also include a mixed-use local centre and public open space, Champion News reports.
The approval notice comes after the application was given the green light by council planners in March 2021, which was subject to conditions and a legal agreement. The new notice is also subject to conditions, including a new link road to connect the site to the new M58 Junction 1 in order to prevent congestion.
While there has been a lot of controversy and debate about the proposals, not least because of the scale involved, some may be delighted to see some homes being built with older people in mind.
Such properties may be fitted with a number of mobility aids, such as easy access baths. When homes have not been designed with such features to start with, retrofitting can be required and this is not always easy to do, such as when a narrow doorway makes wheelchair access tricky.
The incorporation of homes suited to older people is designed to ensure the scheme fits with the Land East of Maghull Masterplan, which envisaged a “broad mix of housing types and tenures to cater for a range of local needs”.
Sefton’s situation may be more promising for older people than that in some other parts of the country, such as Norwich.
Following a Freedom of Information request, the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press has revealed over 4,000 people are waiting for just 200 council houses in the city.
Such a situation means people with disabilities who need bathroom mobility aids may have little choice over the accommodation they are placed in, even if it is far from ideal for them.
