Fall prevention is important as we get older, as a slip or trip can result in serious injuries and in some cases even a hospital stay.
Speaking to the Brainerd Dispatch, Siobhan McMahon, Ph.D., MPH at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, explained that there are a number of steps we can take as we get older to make our homes a safer environment.
Professor McMahon told the news provider that there are a number of reasons why falls can become more likely as we get older, including changes in balance and strength, as well as changes to our vision and environmental hazards.
She also said that physical exercise that focuses on strength and balance is one element that has been found to reduce the risk of injurious falls. Carrying out these exercises at least three times a week can help to improve both strength and mobility, she explained.
In addition to encouraging movement and physical activity, Professor McMahon revealed that there are several other steps we can all take as we age to help improve our mobility and reduce our risk of falls.
One is to get annual eye tests to ensure that you manage any visual conditions that could contribute to falls. Another is to explore the aids you can introduce to your home. These can be simple items like grab bars, as well as considering additions such as walk in baths in the UK.
We recently shared our advice about the top alterations you can make to create an accessible bathroom in your home. As well as looking at the bath and shower, it’s also important to consider your sink and even the width of your doorway.
